Usenet that Obama won the recent debate in Baltimore with Republican
congressman. I wasn't there but from what I have read about the exchanges I
think not. Peter Ferrare in the following article would appear to agree with

The ONLY time republicans think deficits matter is when they're out of
power. Reagan promised to give us less government and balance the
budget. Bush did the same. Instead, they both created mountains of
debt with their tax cuts and spending.

The era of Reagan and Bush saw a decline in the US in nearly every
measure except one...beginning with Reagan we became the largest
debtor nation on earth. When Reagan took office we were the largest
creditor nation on earth. In just a few years. Reagan took us from the
very top to the very bottom and we've never recovered.
